Computer Science Discoveries (CS Discoveries) is an introductory computer science course that empowers students to create authentic artifacts and engage with computer science as a medium for creativity, communication, problem solving, and fun.

The Design Process unit has students consider the broader social impacts of computing. Through a series of design challenges, students are asked to consider and understand the needs of others while developing a solution to a problem. The second half of the unit consists of an iterative team project, during which students have the opportunity to identify a need that they care about, prototype solutions both on paper and in App Lab, and test their solutions with real users to get feedback and drive further iteration.

In the Physical Computing unit, students explore the role of physical devices in computing. Using App Lab and Adafruit’s Circuit Playground, students develop programs that utilize the same hardware inputs and outputs that you see in the smart devices, looking at how a simple rough prototype can lead to a finished product. Then, students explore how physical devices can be used to react to the world around them using a “maker” mindset to create prototypes with everyday materials.

This course is designed for students who would like to learn to type and earn prizes.

The typing goals will be accomplished using a game-based typing program (Typing Club) that saves student progress and allows the teacher and parents to track everything.

With this program and lots of practice, students will master the art of touch typing.

Points and prizes will be based on the amount of time the students practice their typing skills using Typing Club.  Prizes will also be given for improvements in accuracy and speed if the goals for practice time are met.

I track all of the students on a weekly basis to make sure they are practicing and making progress.  I also contact the parents through e-mail and Schoology weekly, to let them know how many hours their kids have practiced so far.

Students will only earn prizes when they attend class.

Typing Club has several levels/classes to choose from to learn to type and it has some additional free lessons on internet safety and internet usage.  There are also free vocabulary and spelling lessons included.

I will put all of the students in the class called "Typing Jungle", however, they can choose a different grade level once they are in class and we discuss their options.

I also include the Typing Club "Stories" that let the students listen to music and see story pictures as they type.

This class will be in the Computer room.

The students can bring their own laptops if that would be better for consistency.

PRACTICING at home is necessary to make progress.  I will send the login information to the parents and ask them to "Bookmark" their login page to Typing Club on their computers.

Students must bring and leave corded headphones that fit over the ears. Amazon has corded, over-the-ear headphones for approximately $12

Students must bring and leave - CORDED, over-the-ear headphones.

I will keep the headphones labeled and in a plastic bag in a bin, so they will be the only ones using their headphones.

The headphones allow the students to hear their keystrokes and the headphones keep them from being distracted by other typers.  This has worked extremely well so far!! There are $12, corded over-the-ear headphones on Amazon.  During the last week in May, please take the headphones home.

Students must be able to work independently on a computer.

Ever wanted to be self-sufficient, learn how to sew your own clothing, accessories and household items?

Then Sewing School is for you! No sewing experience required!

We will start with the basics of sewing machines, how to sew straight lines, and how to iron/press seams. As we go, we will practice our skills in class, starting with simple projects like pillows, tote-bags and keychains. Challenge yourself as the year progresses to learn how to sew curves, add elastic, sew ruffles and gathered garments, and measure and make patterns for clothes. The projects will get more complex as we progress to sewing items with zippers, adding embellishments and decorations, and making out own outfits!

As we go, we will share our new-found talents with those in need, participating in a three different sewing service projects to make bibs, toys and a class quilt for pregnancy centers, sew dresses for girls in poorer nations, and cheer children in hospitals and foster care with colorful pillowcases and dress-up capes.

You will need: your own sewing machine, sewing scissors, straight pins with large heads, fabric pencil or marking chalk, fabric for different projects as needed.

Supplies provided by Quest/Instructor (but which you may need to have access to at home): cutting mat and rotary cutter, irons and ironing board, cutting rulers, project patterns, seam gauges, flexible rulers.

Estimated costs for this class (whole year):

(I try to keep this as affordable as possible, and you’re learning a skill you can use for the rest of your life!)

    •    Fabric: $40-90 – This number is variable because sometimes we will be reusing our scraps for additional projects, and there are always great fabric sales!

    •    Sewing Equipment: $15-25 for pins, Tailor’s chalk, and Scissors (if you have these already this cost is less)

    •    If you don’t have a sewing machine, this will be an extra cost. Beginner sewing machines can run from $90-250 but will last a lifetime!

This class on it's own is not enough hours for HS credit, but could easily be combined with other classes at home for an elective credit.

We may make a class display at the Fine Arts Festival, but no presentation or performance (participation TBD).

The goal of this class is to make classic stories come alive for the students and inspire their imagination and love of reading!

The students will act out several parts of classic children’s stories and then choose their favorite stories to perform in videos that can be shared with their friends and family.

What the students should expect in class – We will start with icebreaker games and “drama” games to get everyone to have fun together.  Then the TAs and teacher will act out a short skit and the students will learn how to be an audience.  The students will read the story of the day out loud and work on projecting their voices while reading.  The students will then take turns acting out certain scenes in the story.  There will be teacher-led discussions on what the authors are trying to show the audience through their stories and analyzing who the story was written for.

Once a “favorite” story is picked, students will:

  Set up the props and backgrounds for the skit

  Choose their costumes or bring them from home

  Memorize their lines to the best of their ability

I will make short videos of the students acting and reading for parents to download and share.

Please donate any costumes you are done using.  My goal is to have a costume bank to help bring the stories ALIVE.

My goal is to make at least 2 videos during the year with the backdrops and costumes.

Please donate costumes and props if you have any you are not using.

Please - Check Schoology weekly for links and homework.

I use videos and e-books as much as possible so the students and parents can easily catch up when classes are missed.

I will also print copies of scripts for the students to use to practice.

Students need to be able to read and be willing to memorize at least a few lines from each “favorite” story.

Is your student passionate about drawing whimsical images? If so, lets refine their writing abilities by crafting descriptive paragraphs about their artwork. Do they have a fascination with wild animals? Imagine the excitement of sketching diverse animals and enriching their writing skills by researching and summarizing each animal's characteristics to compile a captivating nature journal. Perhaps your student dreams of creating a children's book, weaving together narrative and artwork seamlessly? The possibilities in this class are vast and varied, offering each student a personalized journey based on their interests and proficiency levels.

This course is designed to be highly individualized, emphasizing the creation of exceptional writing pieces complemented by unique artwork. Projects will range in complexity, catering to the diverse skills and ages of the students. For instance, younger or novice students might opt for standalone art pieces accompanied by concise paragraphs, while older or advanced students may undertake ambitious long-term projects, incorporating detailed writing alongside each drawing component.

To spark creativity during class sessions, students can utilize tablets for drawing tutorials, consult "how-to-draw" books, or engage in free-drawing exercises.

All written submissions will undergo thorough editing and multiple revisions by the teacher. During this process, students will be encouraged to utilize dictionaries for spelling corrections and thesauruses to enrich their vocabulary and make their writing more expressive. It's important to note that some aspects of the projects may need to be completed or refined at home.

While each writing sample will reflect the individuality of the students, every piece will be guided by specific grammar and writing objectives. These goals may include incorporating quotes, employing descriptive language, utilizing a thesaurus for enhanced word choice, or practicing effective transitional phrases, among others.

The primary objective of this class is to provide a focused environment where students can enjoy drawing and leverage their artwork to refine and enhance their writing abilities.

By the end of the course, all students will have curated a polished portfolio showcasing their artwork alongside corresponding writing pieces, a testament to their growth and accomplishments in both artistic and literary domains.

Students will need a Tablet/iPad, Mixed Media Paper Pad (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073Y74BBZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1), and Bianyo Marker Set (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09L115R5Q?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1)

All Math Mania courses are supplemental to an at-home math course. If you need suggestions for an at-home math course, please inquire at the office.

Age AND math skills should be considered when determining what math mania level is best for each student.

This is a multi-sensory course to sharpen math skills students have already been introduced to at home while having fun and working in groups. This is not a traditional “worksheet-based” math class. This class focuses on various games and friendly competition within groups. The class also centers around money. Kids practice various money labs at the start of each class and earn money that they get to “keep” in their wallet that stays in class. This money can be used to earn prizes or, in some instances, pay debt (late for class, disruptions, bad attitudes, etc). Students will also learn how to "budget" money with a class kept ledger.

Kids in this class should ALREADY be able to do the following:

Know ALL of their multiplication facts 1-12

    Understand numbers to one-million

Able to count back change and add and subtract various combinations of money

Able to read a clock and tell time in any combination of hour and minute hand

    Long division with remainders

    Area/perimeter

Mental addition with regrouping of large numbers

We will practice the above mentioned skills as well as increase student’s proficiency in the following skill-sets:

    Multiples and factors

    Adding and subtracting fractions

    Metric system

multiplying and dividing by 1, 2 and 3 digit numbers

Students will need pencil box, binder, paper, deck of cards

This course is designed to be the last science course the student takes before high school. We generally recommend it as an 8th-grade course, but students can use it for their 9th-grade coursework.

This 3rd Edition of Exploring Creation with Physical Science course discusses atomic structure, periodic table, chemical bonds, reactions and energy, motion, forces, energy, waves and sound, light, electricity and magnetism, and Earth’s structure, weathering, and atmosphere.

This course is specifically designed to help your student gain confidence in his or her science abilities. We continue to build on teaching them independence and responsibility for school work assigned. Your student will learn how to take thorough notes, answer questions with logical answers, and gain a solid foundation to build upon in high school.

Throughout their academic school year, your students will conduct controlled experiments where they observe a problem, ask a question, formulate a testable hypothesis, and then conduct the experiment and analyze the data to see if their results support their hypothesis. This involves quantitative data that require measurements and the lab portion of this course guides students through the process.

Work Load: A couple of items every day (amounting to about 8 items per week) which will include reading the modules, simple lab write-ups, homework questions and tests.

Students will need the Apologia Physical Science 3rd Edition Student Textbook, Student Notebook, and Test Pages

AMERICAN HEROES -  from the 1800s to now.

Some heroes we will cover will be from "Tall Tales" so expect Paul Bunyan, John Henry, and Buffalo Bill.  We will also cover real heroes like Helen Keller, Harriet Tubman, and Dr. Martin Luther King.  We will also be looking for heroes who are not famous but have virtues like compassion, courage, determination, honesty, faith, and loyalty.

What students should expect:  This class is a “History ALIVE Class”, which means we will be having fun learning through skits, games, discussions, art, and videos.

Homework and tests – This class does not have mandatory homework.  Every week, I post worksheets with hyperlinked videos we watched in class.  I encourage all students to review the videos each week and talk about them with their parents and siblings.  The more you talk the more you remember.

Attendance and participation will be graded.

My job is to make the class so fun they won't want to miss a class!

I love studying history and my goal is to encourage the students to love studying history so much that they will do it on their own.

Students will need Scissors, 2 pencils, a box of markers, and Scotch tape.

No textbook required.  I use videos instead of books to truly bring history “alive” for everyone.  I print worksheets when needed.  The students are highly encouraged to re-watch the videos to increase long-term memory and understanding.  I will also challenge them to learn the US geography.

The students should be able to read and write.  If there needs to be an exception, please let me know.

This class is a “History ALIVE Class”, which means we will be having fun learning through skits, games, discussions, art, and videos.

Russia and China are in the news every day, which is the main reason for creating this class.  Both countries have advanced technology, geographical size, and immense natural resources, and both are again trying to expand their borders by force.

Studying the treasures, inventions, and invasions of Russia and China will help students understand why Russia and China are doing what they are doing today.

Homework and tests – Required - 1 to 2 hours of online homework each week that is all done in Schoology.  Midterms and finals are cumulative.

Points will also be earned by attendance, attitude, and participation.

Please plan on turning homework and tests in on time.

The material in this class is for "mature" students who can handle discussions about nuclear war and other real history topics.  I try to make it as age-appropriate as possible, but history is real.

Students must bring pencils and paper to each class.

I use videos instead of books to truly bring history “alive” for everyone.  I print weekly worksheets. The students will need to watch the videos multiple times and take notes, just like using a book.  The videos I use are Crash Course, Tom Richey, Infographics, the History Channel, and classic educational video clips.  All of the videos are hyperlinked each week in Schoology or linked in the Schoology homework assignments.

The class material is age appropriate for Middle School and High School students, however, I recommend this class for “mature” students because we will be discussing real world events.  I try to stay neutral when it comes to US politics, however, the students sometimes have discussions about politics in class.

In this class we will look at American history by focusing on the stories of Asian Americans, from 1587 until the present day. We will learn about many Asian American trailblazers who have helped to build this amazing country. Children's literature - picture books, two historical fiction chapter books, and poetry - will be the main way we learn the story of Asians in US history. We will also watch short videos and put events on a timeline and maps to put them in context. Students will work in groups as well as have chances to read and speak in front of the class. There will be homework - mostly reading the chapter books, writing a one paragraph summary of what they read. We will focus on learning the stories of Asian American pioneers in science, technology, the arts, politics, military service, etc., as well as trends and waves in immigration and how events fit together with the greater story of American history, as opposed to focusing on memorizing lots of facts. A few times in the year we will have "Celebration Days" when we do light cooking or baking, do crafts/coloring, try various Asian American foods and play games to review what we have learned.

I plan to use my curriculum, Streams: Asian American History for Kids. We will do Filipino American history from 1587 to present, then start back at 1850 to go through Chinese American history, then back to the late 1800's for Japanese American history, etc. I do each type of Asian American history through chronologically by itself because each "stream" of Asian America has it's own story, it's own reasons the people migrated when and how they did. That is why we do the timeline, because as we do one group, they will put it's events on the timeline to see how they connect to the events from the other groups. So kids can see that events going on related to the Chinese American community effect Japanese Americans, etc.

Students will need a timeline, a simple pocket folder, a pencil, a ziploc plastic bag, and a set of colored pencils - these will all be kept in the room in a pencil bag or box along with their timeline.

Required books: The Dragon's Child by Laurence Yep and Step Up To the Plate, Maria Singh by Uma Krishnaswami (historical fiction chapter books), Shining A Light: Celebrating 40 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Who Changed the World by Veeda Bybee and a timeline from 1587-present. Students can put together their own timeline or buy one that will be released soon from our graphic designer at our curriculum website -http://www.resilientpandahisotry.com
