Computer Science Discoveries (CS Discoveries) is an introductory computer science course that empowers students to create authentic artifacts and engage with computer science as a medium for creativity, communication, problem solving, and fun.
The Design Process unit has students consider the broader social impacts of computing. Through a series of design challenges, students are asked to consider and understand the needs of others while developing a solution to a problem. The second half of the unit consists of an iterative team project, during which students have the opportunity to identify a need that they care about, prototype solutions both on paper and in App Lab, and test their solutions with real users to get feedback and drive further iteration.
In the Physical Computing unit, students explore the role of physical devices in computing. Using App Lab and Adafruit’s Circuit Playground, students develop programs that utilize the same hardware inputs and outputs that you see in the smart devices, looking at how a simple rough prototype can lead to a finished product. Then, students explore how physical devices can be used to react to the world around them using a “maker” mindset to create prototypes with everyday materials.

This course is designed for students who would like to learn to type and earn prizes.
The typing goals will be accomplished using a game-based typing program (Typing Club) that saves student progress and allows the teacher and parents to track everything.
With this program and lots of practice, students will master the art of touch typing.
Points and prizes will be based on the amount of time the students practice their typing skills using Typing Club. Prizes will also be given for improvements in accuracy and speed if the goals for practice time are met.
I track all of the students on a weekly basis to make sure they are practicing and making progress. I also contact the parents through e-mail and Schoology weekly, to let them know how many hours their kids have practiced so far.
Students will only earn prizes when they attend class.
Typing Club has several levels/classes to choose from to learn to type and it has some additional free lessons on internet safety and internet usage. There are also free vocabulary and spelling lessons included.
I will put all of the students in the class called "Typing Jungle", however, they can choose a different grade level once they are in class and we discuss their options.
I also include the Typing Club "Stories" that let the students listen to music and see story pictures as they type.
This class will be in the Computer room.
The students can bring their own laptops if that would be better for consistency.
PRACTICING at home is necessary to make progress. I will send the login information to the parents and ask them to "Bookmark" their login page to Typing Club on their computers.
Students must bring and leave corded headphones that fit over the ears. Amazon has corded, over-the-ear headphones for approximately $12
Students must bring and leave - CORDED, over-the-ear headphones.
I will keep the headphones labeled and in a plastic bag in a bin, so they will be the only ones using their headphones.
The headphones allow the students to hear their keystrokes and the headphones keep them from being distracted by other typers. This has worked extremely well so far!! There are $12, corded over-the-ear headphones on Amazon. During the last week in May, please take the headphones home.
Students must be able to work independently on a computer.

How to learn to type – PRACTICE! Practice at home and at QUEST. Every lesson can be a game if you challenge yourself to go faster. Bookmark your typing programs on every computer you use.
Grades – Students will earn points from their progress in Typing Club.
I will be using “Typing Club” to keep track of progress. I have enabled the “Placement Test” option so students can test out of lessons that are too easy for them.
Students may choose between their Grade Level typing class or from “Typing Jungle”.
Typing Club grades will come from “Typing Club” stats that you and your child can view online.
Parents – Please encourage your children to practice at home and they will make progress faster.
Parents – You can check your child’s daily progress in TypingClub through your child’s account. Please bookmark the site. I will be updating grades in Schoology once a month. I will be giving you and your child the same directions on how to log in.

Ever wanted to be self-sufficient, learn how to sew your own clothing, accessories and household items?
Then Sewing School is for you! No sewing experience required!
We will start with the basics of sewing machines, how to sew straight lines, and how to iron/press seams. As we go, we will practice our skills in class, starting with simple projects like pillows, tote-bags and keychains. Challenge yourself as the year progresses to learn how to sew curves, add elastic, sew ruffles and gathered garments, and measure and make patterns for clothes. The projects will get more complex as we progress to sewing items with zippers, adding embellishments and decorations, and making out own outfits!
As we go, we will share our new-found talents with those in need, participating in a three different sewing service projects to make bibs, toys and a class quilt for pregnancy centers, sew dresses for girls in poorer nations, and cheer children in hospitals and foster care with colorful pillowcases and dress-up capes.
You will need: your own sewing machine, sewing scissors, straight pins with large heads, fabric pencil or marking chalk, fabric for different projects as needed.
Supplies provided by Quest/Instructor (but which you may need to have access to at home): cutting mat and rotary cutter, irons and ironing board, cutting rulers, project patterns, seam gauges, flexible rulers.
Estimated costs for this class (whole year):
(I try to keep this as affordable as possible, and you’re learning a skill you can use for the rest of your life!)
• Fabric: $40-90 – This number is variable because sometimes we will be reusing our scraps for additional projects, and there are always great fabric sales!
• Sewing Equipment: $15-25 for pins, Tailor’s chalk, and Scissors (if you have these already this cost is less)
• If you don’t have a sewing machine, this will be an extra cost. Beginner sewing machines can run from $90-250 but will last a lifetime!
This class on it's own is not enough hours for HS credit, but could easily be combined with other classes at home for an elective credit.

This class will journey to the:
Center of the earth (Lithosphere)
Highest Heavens (Atmosphere)
Deepest Oceans (Hydrosphere)
Zone of Life (Biosphere)
Goal – Encourage students to want to know more about the “Miraculous” spheres and nations of their planet.
What to expect:
This class will study Physical Geography which includes making 3-D maps that will enable students to understand the topography of each continent. Physical Geography also includes learning about each of the 4 spheres and how they interact to make life possible. We will use online Geography Games that teach the nations of the modern world. (Plus, the names of all 50 US states).
We will have new vocabulary words each week that will help students in future classes and ACT/SAT tests.
Examples – Topography, Geomorphology, Hydrology, Biogeography, Pedology etc.
Homework – 1 ½ hours of homework per week. Homework will include playing Seterra Geography Games, watching assigned videos, taking online quizzes, and completing projects at home. Plus studying for tests and quizzes. TESTS and QUIZZES will be an essential part of learning in this class.
Prerequisites – It is very important that the students are able to read and write at GRADE LEVEL. The students in this class should also be able to focus for a class that is 1 ½ hours long.
Books – I use educational videos instead of books to keep the cost of the class down. Each week I post lesson plans with links so students can study the material carefully and catch up if they were unable to attend. I also make my own study sheets, tests and quizzes so I can target the most useful information.
Parent Volunteers are always encouraged! The more helpers we have the more we can accomplish.
Donations – I will be asking for donations of recycled items for map projects and candy to be used on REVIEW DAYS.

This class is a “History ALIVE Class”, which means we will be having fun learning through skits, games, discussions, art, and videos.
Russia and China are in the news every day, which is the main reason for creating this class. Both countries have advanced technology, geographical size, and immense natural resources, and both are again trying to expand their borders by force.
Studying the treasures, inventions, and invasions of Russia and China will help students understand why Russia and China are doing what they are doing today.
Homework and tests – Required - 1 to 2 hours of online homework each week that is all done in Schoology. Midterms and finals are cumulative.
Points will also be earned by attendance, attitude, and participation.
Please plan on turning homework and tests in on time.
The material in this class is for "mature" students who can handle discussions about nuclear war and other real history topics. I try to make it as age-appropriate as possible, but history is real.
Students must bring pencils and paper to each class.
I use videos instead of books to truly bring history “alive” for everyone. I print weekly worksheets. The students will need to watch the videos multiple times and take notes, just like using a book. The videos I use are Crash Course, Tom Richey, Infographics, the History Channel, and classic educational video clips. All of the videos are hyperlinked each week in Schoology or linked in the Schoology homework assignments.
The class material is age appropriate for Middle School and High School students, however, I recommend this class for “mature” students because we will be discussing real world events. I try to stay neutral when it comes to US politics, however, the students sometimes have discussions about politics in class.
